Does anyone remember the Super Bowl in 2006? I'm sure most of us would rather forget. It's the reason I hated Manning until he retired, and my number one we got cheated as a Bears fan. We outsmarted ourselves in a game where we held most of the momentum. Also, Ron Turner's decision to throw on second and 1 in the third quarter should easily qualify him as a war criminal. The play ended in a sack which led to a fumble which led to some drunk guy at my friend's dad's house party falling down the stairs in slow motion.
I never loved Lovie as our coach. I always thought he picked the wrong plays at the wrong times, 3rd and 15 he'd run it, 2nd and 1 he'd throw it. Lovie was an expert at building a lead and then calling plays that Bambi himself would call timid and then blow the lead. One example is the game against the Seahawks that same year in the playoffs where he gave a timeout to the Seahawks on their own 46, which almost cost us the season right then and there.
Our defense in 06 was mean, Urlacher, Briggs, Tillman, D.J. Moore, Ricky Manning Jr., do I need to say more? Not to mention the straight-up domination Hester had over the league that year. The Colt's run got the best of us but I see things going a little differently had we not lost Mike Brown and Tommie Harris. We got to the Super Bowl with Rex Grossman, above all else is an accomplishment worth celebrating, but man do I still feel cheated all these years later.
I didn't have a lot of confidence in the Bear's Cutlers last year or two and it's been shaky at QB since then. But now with Fields, a new front office, an aging Rodgers, and a little hope, I'm thinking we'll be back in the big game before we know it.
Here's a clip of the opening kickoff that will forever be engrained in my head.
