First of all, the biggest reason is that the Packers will be in cap hell for a long time now. Rodgers is an amazing player and he has dominated the league for a while now. But you don't have to be a genius to figure out that paying $50 million per year to a soon-to-be 39-year-old player is not the best financial move. If you pair that up with the other huge contracts they have everywhere on the roster, this could be bad. Just a little example, RB Aaron Jones has a cap hit of over $20 million per year in 2023 and 2024. For a running back...
The other aspect that I like from Rodgers' extension is that this will force the Bears to improve. If Rodgers left the Packers, they would have probably entered some kind of rebuild and the NFC North division would have been pretty terrible. But, with the Packers still being relevant, the Bears will have to win the North by getting way better. Because let's say Rodgers was out, the Bears could have won the division with a 9-8 record. However, you still have to win games outside of your division come playoff time. With that being said, I expect Ryan Poles to make some solid signings with the additional cap space he has created with the Khalil Mack trade. He also has a little more draft capital now.
Take a look at what we can expect a lot more of in 2022:
