The Texans have hired San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans as their new head coach, it was announced Tuesday.

The deal is for six years; sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The AFC South club, which has finished with double-digit losing seasons for the past three seasons has chosen Ryans as their sixth full-time coach in team history.

Much like when Robert Saleh was hired by the New York Jets as their head coach, the loss of Ryans is indeed a stinging one. Replacing and losing Ryans is challenging as the 49ers would've loved to have retained him, but they are definitely ecstatic about this opportunity for him. Ryans is more than deserving of it, and it's been expected since before the 2022 season started. The work Ryans has done both as a leader, and a schematic standpoint for the 49ers' defense is impeccable.

In 2020 the NFL implemented a new rule to try to incentivize teams to develop minority coaches and executives, which rewarded any team with two third-round compensatory picks if a minority was hired away from their franchise to become another team's head coach or General Manager or three third-round compensatory picks if other teams hired away two minorities. Ryans will fit that bill.
