Last month, the Bears made waves in the NFL draft scene by trading their No. 1 overall pick to the Carolina Panthers for DJ Moore, the No. 9 pick in this year's draft, a first-round pick next year, and a bunch of other selections. The Bears recently unveiled more details about this sensational deal in the latest episode of their 1920 Football Drive series.

Ryan Poles, in the video, mentioned that there were periods of calm followed by intense pacing as the deal unfolded. He had earlier stated that multiple teams were vying for the No. 1 overall pick, with serious negotiations spanning three days before reaching the ideal package, which included a future first-round pick and a top-tier player.

Poles explained that the dynamics of negotiations varied greatly, with some teams being highly aggressive while others were more subtle. Ultimately, the Bears struck a deal with Carolina, a team that consistently pursued the Bears during the process.

From the get-go, Poles knew that the Panthers were intent on securing their quarterback and controlling the draft. He had a strong rapport with their general manager, Scott Fitterer, and believed that finalizing the deal early was better than prolonging it. Critics argue that Poles could have held out for a more lucrative offer featuring additional first-round picks or pressured the Panthers for higher value selections.

In the end, the Bears reached an agreement with Carolina:

«I knew from the jump that they were a team that really wanted their quarterback. They wanted to control the draft. That meant a lot to them. They got in front early, at the combine. I had a good relationship with their general manager, Scott Fitterer, and felt like at that time it was best to close on the deal when we did, instead of dragging it out.»

However, a crucial factor in accepting the early March deal was the imminent arrival of free agency. With Moore's hefty contract in play, both the Bears and Panthers stood to gain from having salary cap clarity before negotiating with free agents. Poles expressed his satisfaction with the decision to proceed with Fitterer and Carolina, noting that the trade not only benefited the team by acquiring DJ Moore but also secured valuable future draft picks.
