Sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter on Tuesday that doctors concluded Garoppolo did not suffer a Lisfranc injury to his broken left foot and will not need surgery. If his rehabilitation goes well, he has a chance to return in seven to eight weeks, the sources said.
Garoppolo was carted off the field Sunday, and coach Kyle Shanahan said after that he broke a «few things» in his foot. The initial thought was that Garoppolo, who replaced starter Trey Lance early in the season after he went down, would be done for the season.
That paved the way for former Iowa State star Brock Purdy, who led the 49ers to a 33-17 win, to finish out the season.
As it currently stands, the 49ers are in first place in the NFC West with a record of 8-4 and boast the NFL's best defence in opposing points and yardage.
Garoppolo won't be cleared for NFL action until at least seven weeks for now, in time for the NFC Divisional round, but if rehab doesn't go well he may not return for the Conference Championships or Super Bowl if San Francisco were to make it that far.
