Despite a productive stint with the Bears and no fruitful trade coming from his permission to seek a move, Johnson remains committed. The team's latest acquisition, Montez Sweat, in need of a new contract next season, hasn't ruffled Johnson, but an immediate contract for Sweat could stir discontent.
Johnson expressed a level of equanimity about the trade for Sweat but noted that a quick signing for the defensive end would be a bitter pill to swallow. "It's a business where opportunities are seized and somebody will get the paydayI'm aware of that," Johnson acknowledged.
When pressed on his comfort level with Sweat receiving a contract extension before him, Johnson's response was unequivocal: "No, it wouldn't sit right with me. Definitely not."
With some room in their salary cap for the next season, the Bears might manage to satisfy both players. Yet, it's clear that a preemptive deal for Sweat could lead to frustration for Johnson, who has seen little advancement in his own negotiations.
Should he enter free agency, Johnson's performance, with 143 tackles, three interceptions, and three forced fumbles in 45 NFL starts, would make him an attractive option for multiple teams.
