Justin Fields, the talented quarterback for the Chicago Bears, has been known for taking his health seriously. When it comes to being a world-class athlete, every aspect of life matters, including diet. Fields had been strictly following a vegan diet since entering the NFL, which means avoiding all animal-based products like meat, fish, and dairy, and focusing on plant-based foods. Fields might have learned from the experiences of former Carolina Panthers MVP quarterback, Cam Newton. Newton had embraced a vegan diet in 2019, hoping it would boost his performance. However, signs of trouble appeared almost immediately as his play declined, and injuries started to pile up. Nutritionists and experts noted that the drastic weight loss associated with the diet, combined with decreased muscle mass, likely contributed to his physical struggles.

While Newton shed pounds and dropped from 250-260 lbs to the 230s, his energy levels plummeted, and his body became more prone to injuries. The drop in muscle mass affected his ability to recover and perform at his peak. His passer rating suffered as well, going from a solid 86.4 during his career before 2019 to 77.1 in his final three years.

Fields seems to have taken note of this, realizing that maintaining a healthy weight and muscle mass is essential for an NFL player. With his style of play, involving running and pocket presence, he can't afford to be in a state of starvation or face increased risks of injuries. By adopting a pescatarian diet and incorporating fish into his meals, Fields aims to build and maintain the necessary muscle mass to withstand the physical demands of the NFL.
