Beloved Chicago icon and devoted @ChicagoBears fan, Don Savage, has passed at the age of 106. Notable for being the holder of season tickets for an impressive 75 years, the north-side resident also left an indelible mark in softball, securing over 40 championships and earning a place in the 16-inch Softball Hall of Fame in 2014. During a press conference on Friday, Bears head coach Matt Eberflus took a moment to commemorate Savage's legacy.
"We lost one of our most steadfast season ticket holders on Thursday, at the age of 106, Don Savage," Eberflus said. "I'd like to honor his memory. My heart goes out to his family and friends. Don dedicated 50 years as the head usher at Queen of All Saints, and he was one of the truest Bears supporters. I want to extend a special acknowledgment to him and his family."
Savage's obituary reveals a man who was not just a spectator but an active sportsman. His induction into the 16-inch Softball Hall of Fame in 2014 was a testament to his athletic talent. Beyond the field, Savage had a lengthy and successful career at Gateway Erectors, working for 72 years and retiring as the vice president.
"Don Savage was a fixture in the 16-inch softball community for 78 years, from 1935 until the close of the 2013 season. His teams celebrated over 40 championships, and Don has either played in or managed around 35 senior leagues across Chicago and its suburbs," remembered the Hall of Fame.
Eberflus also spoke of Savage's professional and athletic feats.
In recent sports updates, an ex-Bears player has offered a straightforward perspective on the debate between keeping Justin Fields or opting for a new quarterback in the draft. Meanwhile, Shohei Ohtani has surpassed Fields and others in a remarkable achievement.
"It's quite remarkable. A 72-year career in sales. I learned more from our PR department; he was a titan in 16-inch softball, which is a significant part of Chicago culture. Inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2014," Eberflus stated. "Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with his family."
Savage leaves behind a loving family, including his daughters Ginny (Jim) Warner and Peggy (the late Lou) Schumacher, six grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren.
