Bears head coach Matt Eberflus was asked in an interview at the NFL combine about trying to put some pieces together at the receiving position. Here was his answer:
"You want explosive, athletic ability there that can produce chunk plays. So, if you throw a screen, you want a guy that can take it and go for 15 or all the way. The controlled passing game is just that, but the athletes are the guys that make you miss."
He also added this quote that really stood out to me:
"They have to be strong at the point of attack to be able to block. We're gonna put a big onus on the running game. They have to be able to do that. Then you have to have different traits at different positions. One guy might be quick and he's really a short-route runner. Another guy can do it all. That would be our number 1 receiver. Should be able to do that. And the other guy should be able to take the top off the defense. that puts stress on the defense."
There is a lot of good stuff on that quote. I agree 100% with him. Blocking is really underrated as a receiver and you need it from all of your guys. Also, I have mentioned multiple times in here that a receiving core has to be like a basketball lineup. You have bigger and taller guys, you have guys that have different strengths, a shooter, a defender, a playmaker, etc. This is the same for a receiving core.
It will be very interesting to see which players are gonna fill each of these holes...
