During a session on 670 the Score, NBC's Peter King weighed in on the topic, hinting at the Bears' perspective after discussing Fields' early season struggles. Referencing multiple chats with Poles during the NFL combine, King noted a certain hesitancy.
"He never explicitly told me, 'Justin Fields is our unwavering QB.' Rather, he emphasized, 'We believe in Justin Fields. He will be given every chance to establish himself as the Bears' QB for the long run,'" King recalled. "However, he didn't guarantee it would be Fields' position indefinitely."
It's essential to note that Poles wasn't the one who brought Fields to the Bears. That decision was made by former GM Ryan Pace in the 2021 NFL draft when he negotiated a trade with the New York Giants to secure Fields. Months later, Pace exited, and Poles stepped into his shoes.
Given this, Fields isn't Poles' selection. He merely took on the legacy of the former GM and provided Fields an opportunity to showcase his potential. Should Fields not meet expectations, Poles might wish to have his own stamp on the QB position. King seems to think this shift might be imminent.
"In my view, Fields might only have a limited window to prove himself," commented King. "The crux for the Bears is to have clarity on their 2024 QB by the end of this year."
As of now, Fields isn't looking like that QB for 2024.
His current performance is underwhelming, with an average of 175 yards per game, three touchdowns, and four interceptions to his name this season.
Unless there's a significant upswing in his performance, Fields might find himself sidelined. If that unfolds, Poles might seize the opportunity in the 2024 draft to reshape the team's future.
