Randi Martin, the mother of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, has shown her support for Harrison Butker following his controversial commencement speech at Benedictine College in Kansas.
Butker, the Kansas City Chiefs' kicker and a devout Catholic, faced intense criticism on social media for remarks that many deemed sexist and homophobic.
During his speech at the Catholic liberal arts college, Butker stressed traditional gender roles, suggesting that women should prioritize being wives and homemakers over pursuing careers or academic achievements.
The 28-year-old also faced backlash for condemning LGBTQ+ Pride Month, referring to the annual celebration as a "deadly sin."
On Friday, Butker defended his speech at a gala hosted by Regina Caeli Academy, a Catholic homeschooling organization where he serves on the board.
Speaking at the event in Nashville, Tennessee, Butker suggested the backlash indicated that "timeless Catholic values are hated by many."
"Over the past few days, my beliefsor what people think I believehave been the focus of countless discussions around the globe," he said. "At the outset, many people expressed a shocking level of hate. But as the days went on, even those who disagreed with my viewpoints shared their support for my freedom of religion."
