For the first three years of his career, witnessing Jaylon Johnson excel as the Chicago Bears' top cornerback felt like our best-kept secret. Bears fans recognized Johnson's talent in the same way locals know the hidden gems for tacos and pizza. However, Johnson's brilliance never seemed to gain widespread recognition.

Then came his breakout season in 2023, and it was nothing short of spectacular. Johnson's performance earned him a spot on Pro Football Focus' All-Breakout Team for that year.

You can truly appreciate why when you watch this Jaylon Johnson highlight reel. And if that doesn't impress you, let me share an explanation from Jim Wyman:

With free agency approaching, Jaylon Johnson likely significantly increased his market value with his outstanding 2023 performance. He was the only cornerback to surpass DaRon Bland in PFF grade (90.8) and led the position in coverage grade (91.0).

Despite being heavily involved in 530 coverage snaps, Johnson allowed just 25 receptions on 50 targets for 195 yards and one touchdown, in addition to recording four interceptions. Unless he's tagged with the franchise label or extends his contract with the Bears, anticipate Johnson to be one of the most sought-after players in the 2024 offseason.

Besides topping PFF rankings, Johnson set a new career high in interceptions (4) and had his most passes defended since his rookie year in 2020 (10), all while playing in 91 percent of the team's defensive snaps. Johnson's breakout season earned him second-team All-Pro honors and a Pro Bowl invitation. While the Pro Bowl may have lost some of its luster, it's worth noting that Johnson's Pro Bowl selection was a primary one, not as an alternate. In this context, his Pro Bowl nod speaks volumes about his 2023 performance.

What lies ahead for Bears cornerback Jaylon Johnson?

The potential downside is that Jaylon Johnson is poised to become a free agent in March. As highlighted by Pro Football Focus, Johnson will be a highly sought-after free agent unless he reaches an extension agreement with the team. The upside is that it seems unlikely for Johnson to hit free agency. First, he has consistently expressed his desire to stay in Chicago. Second, he anticipates reaching an extension deal with the Bears. Third, Bears General Manager Ryan Poles has stated that Johnson is not leaving. So, it appears settled, right?

In case negotiations don't yield an extension, the team could resort to placing the Franchise or Transition Tag on him. OverTheCap projects the cornerback Franchise Tag number at $18.421 million, based on the top five salaries at the position. Additionally, the Transition Tag is expected to be $15.889 million in 2024, based on the top 10 salaries at the position.

In 2023, Jaylon Johnson excelled in all aspects of his game. He showcased top-tier coverage skills and started intercepting passes thrown his way. While he did miss some interception opportunities last season, what stood out was his ability to bounce back immediately and not let a missed chance affect his overall play. Sometimes, a dropped interception can mentally affect players, but not Johnson. His consistency on the field speaks volumes, and soon, his compensation will reflect his excellence.
