Seattle Seahawks star wide receiver Tyler Lockett straightforwardly shared on Twitter about how he has dealt with mental health issues in the National Football League, even during games.

The superstar wide receiver isn't just one of the team's best and most beloved players, he's established himself as a community activist and a major advocate for (among other causes) mental health awareness.

It is especially important for athletes, who serve as role models all while experiencing unique mental health struggles, to be upfront about what they're experiencing. Even though professional athletes achieve some of the greatest emotional highs you could imagine, there are also unique lows in losses, which can create anxiety, depression, and seven a low self-esteem.

To combat the stigma around mental health issues and show the sports world what living with them looks and feels like, Lockett shared a powerful account about how he spent at least two of his seven NFL seasons struggling with depression and anxiety.

Lockett has been an amazing player ever since he joined the NFL. He holds the Seahawks' record for receptions in a season; he had 100 catches in 2020. The 29-year-old Lockett began his career in 2015 as an All-Pro and Pro Bowl selection while a rookie for Seattle.

Cornerback Sidney Jones is another Seattle player who has acknowledged fighting through depression and anxiety. The former University of Washington Husky tore his Achilles tendon at his UW pro day just before his NFL draft in 2017. As he told the Seahawks' team website, he got help from a therapist. Last season Jones played for Seattle wearing custom pink shoes with the name and logo of the non-profit Mental Health America for the league's My Cause, My Cleats week.
