The Chicago Bears, under the leadership of General Manager Ryan Poles, have shown interest in adding another star to their defensive lineup. According to Payne Insider from the Bet the Board podcast, the Bears have approached the Kansas City Chiefs regarding the status of their standout defensive tackle, Chris Jones. Jones has been noticeably absent from the Chiefs' training camp due to a contract standoff and doesn't seem keen on joining any time soon.

Payne Insider touched upon Jones' situation during a recent episode of the betting podcast while discussing the AFC West. Insider mentioned, "While I'm not suggesting a trade is imminent, the Bears have shown interest in Chris Jones, especially with the team looking to capitalize on Justin Fields' rookie contract."

ESPN 1000's Carmen DeFalco brought this report to light during the "Carmen and Jurko" show, describing Insider as having a well-informed network across the NFL.

After a series of trades, signings, and high-profile draft picks, the Bears' roster has seen significant changes this offseason. Their most recent acquisition was the experienced pass rusher, Yannick Ngakoue, on a $10.5 million deal for one year. And now, indications are that they might be setting their sights on one of the NFL's elite defensive tackles.

Jones, selected by the Chiefs in the 2016 NFL Draft's second round, quickly made a name for himself. He recorded an impressive 15.5 sacks in 2018 and has consistently been a top performer, aiding the Chiefs in clinching two Super Bowl victories. With 243 tackles, 65 sacks, and 12 forced fumbles to his name, he's garnered four Pro Bowl recognitions and one First-Team All-Pro selection.

However, his stellar performances come with a cost. Jones seeks a renewed deal after signing a four-year agreement in 2020 worth a potential $80 million, of which $60 million was guaranteed. As the 29-year-old enters his contract's last year, he aspires to command a top-tier salary and is prepared to hold out till Week 8, the latest he can to remain eligible for free agency the subsequent season. Reports suggest Jones is eyeing a $30 million annual package in his new contract.

Having joined the Bears in early 2022, Poles has typically avoided grand gestures that necessitate heavy investment or sending draft picks. But with his previous involvement in drafting Jones during his tenure with the Chiefs' front office, Jones might be the exception. As the 2023 season approaches, it remains to be seen if the Bears or any other team will make a decisive move for Jones. One thing is clear, Poles is keen on positioning the Bears as serious contenders.
