The team had asked its players to post a memorial to Mo Ruffins, a former Empire offensive lineman who died last year at age 38. The tribute was initially posted but later removed, leading to questions from the players.
The players reportedly sought answers from Brown at an Albany cigar lounge, having failed to get a satisfactory response from the team's front office. During the ensuing confrontation, Brown allegedly directed his assistant Ryan Larkin to retrieve an assault rifle from a car, according to wide receiver Darius Prince.
"Antonio said to Ryan, 'Do you still have the AR in the car? Bring it,'" Prince claimed in his interview with ESPN. "I thought, 'I can't let him leave the place after making such a threat.' Things eventually de-escalated, and we talked it out, but he did threaten us by instructing his assistant to get his gun."
Brown, who is no longer affiliated with the teamnow also expelled from the Arena Leagueis also recently in the news for failure to pay child support. This latest incident has led many fans to express concern for his well-being.
