Since last season, a vocal section of Steelers fans have been urging head coach Mike Tomlin to relieve offensive coordinator Matt Canada of his duties. If the team's offense doesn't pick up its pace, Tomlin might be pushed to consider changes. Gerry Dulac, a reporter for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, when quizzed about a potential successor for Canada, mentioned Jon Gruden, a Super Bowl-winning former head coach and a close acquaintance of Tomlin:
"It's premature to make predictions. However, considering Tomlin's associates, Jon Gruden stands out."
Gruden served as the head coach for the Oakland Raiders between 1998-2001 and took charge of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2002 to 2008. He resumed coaching the Raiders in 2018 but resigned during the 2021 season when leaked emails revealed his use of derogatory and discriminatory language.
Appointing Gruden could trigger a PR challenge for the Steelers, especially as Gruden is currently consulting for the New Orleans Saints. It's yet to be determined if the Steelers view Gruden as their optimal choice for the offensive coordinator role.
After a riveting win against their longtime rivals, the Baltimore Ravens, the Steelers are utilizing their bye week to gear up for a Week 7 away game facing the Los Angeles Rams.
