REPORT: Sean Payton Is Interested In Returning To Coaching Either Of These Two Teams
The NFL has already seen two head coaching vacancies open up this season -- and plenty more appear to be on the way over the next six weeks. Sean Payton, who stepped down as New Orleans Saints head coach last year, is awaiting his next opportunity -- and a few intriguing jobs that might become available.
ESPN is reporting two teams Payton is keeping an eye on are the Los Angeles Chargers and Arizona Cardinals.
According to Dan Graziano, the Arizona Cardinals and Los Angeles Chargers are two teams to keep an eye on in the Payton sweepstakes:
«Carolina, for example, would probably love a chance to throw a pile of money at Payton. But my sense is that he'll be picky and will look for a spot where the QB situation is solid, first and foremost. That's why I think a lot of people are connecting him with a potential Chargers opening. People would line up to coach Justin Herbert if that job came open. If not there, I've been told to watch Arizona as a potential Payton destination (again, assuming there's an opening there).»
Payton is a transcendent offensive mastermind. During his time in New Orleans, the Saints finished first in total offense six times in 16 seasons, twice they led the league in scoring and four times and top-three scoring offense. Between 2006 and 2018, they gained more yards than any team in NFL history over a 12-year span.
