According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the San Francisco 49ers will need to search for a new kicker for the 2023 season as veteran kicker Robbie Gould has declared his intention to become a free agent and play for another team. It is uncertain whether this decision was mutually agreed upon or initiated by one party. Nonetheless, Gould, who is now the most sought-after kicker in free agency, will need to be replaced by the 49ers. This task is not an easy one, especially given the scarcity of consistent kickers in today's NFL.

Gould signed with the 49ers as a free agent in 2017 after playing one season with the New York Giants. Prior to that, he spent the first 11 years of his career (from 2005 to 2015) with the Chicago Bears, where he helped lead them to a Super Bowl 41 appearance in his second year. The 40-year-old kicker boasts a career field goal percentage of 86.5%, having successfully converted on 84.4% of his attempts for the 49ers last season and 87% the year before that. Gould has made 36 of 51 kicks from 50-plus yards in his career.
