NFL stadiums across the country have two types of fields: grass or turf. Since Astroturf was introduced to the NFL in 1965 due to its lower costs and ease of maintenance over natural grass, players have suffered numerous non-contact injuries to their lower extremities.

In a study that the NFL conducted from 2012 to 2018, the league found that players have a 28% higher rate of non-contact lower extremity injuries when playing on artificial turf. Additionally, up to 69% of foot and ankle injuries occur on turf fields as opposed to natural grass. An alarming number for players, teams, and fans alike.

Well, 49ers' defensive end Nick Bosa mentioned that it would be a crucial aspect of his future decisions in free agency. Indeed, Bosa will likely become one of the highest-paid defensive players in NFL history, but the playing surface of that team will factor into his decision. During an interview with The Athletic, Bosa revealed that his free agency decision will be heavily influenced by whether a team plays on grass or turf.

This is interesting and I'm curious to see if this will start to be a huge factor for others in years' to come...
