Smith-Marsette got his first significant playing time in the offense in Chicago's 29-22 loss at Minnesota two weeks ago and he committed two extremely costly mistakes. It's safe to say that his time with the Bears was very disappointing.
He had the ball taken away from behind by Vikings' CB Cameron Dantzler at the Vikings 39 following a reception on the Bears' final drive to decide the game. He also got flagged for an illegal block from behind on a 52-yard scramble by quarterback Justin Fields, negating a touchdown. You could make a case that those two plays changed the outcome of the game. The Bears had signed Smith-Marsette just before the start of the season after Minnesota cut him.
Smith-Marsette seemed to seal his fate when he dropped a pass in the Thursday night loss to the Washington Commanders with the Bears facing fourth-and-11 at the Washington 48 with 2:28 remaining.
