The biggest example of that happened last year when the Bills and the Chiefs faced off in the divisional round of the AFC playoffs. All throughout the game, both offenses could not be stopped. The duel between two of the top quarterbacks in our game Patrick mahomes and Josh Allen ended up going to overtime.
However, when the Chiefs won the toss, pretty much everyone watching the game knew the game was most likely over. Mahomes marched his team down the field to score the game-winning touchdown and Josh Allen, despite having one of the best games in the history of the NFL, did not have a chance to step on the field. It was really sad to watch the game unfold at the end.
New rule
With the new rule change, this scenario will not happen again during the playoffs. Ian Rapoport reported that a new rule has been accepted by the NFL owners. Now, both teams are guaranteed a possession in overtime.
This rule change is so important. Over the past decade, teams that won the overtime coin flip in the postseason had a record 10-2, including seven of those 10 wins coming on the opening possession.
However, the regular-season overtime rules will not change from last year. This is because the new rule will make the game longer and thus create more chances for the players to hurt themselves.
Rapoport also added that the vote was 29-3 in favor of the rule change by the owners.
