Former Bears offensive line and 1985 Super Bowl winner Tom Thayer threw a jab at a former Bears offensive line coach Juan Castillo
Thayer made an appearance on the Mully & Haught show for 670 The Score. He was asked about the comments from Ryan Poles about the offensive line needing to get lighter and quicker. His response was very funny:
"It could be a message sent to Juan Castillo, even though he's not here."
He then said that his problem with Castillo is that he only wanted linemen who were over 320 pounds. Thayer also said that this makes for players that can't move as well as you would like.
He has a point, when you look at the best lineman in the league, they are not necessarily the biggest, but they all have one thing in common: they are agile and they can move.
While he was a little harsh in his response, I believe Thayer is 100% right. Weight is a little overrated for a lineman. Of course, he needs to be strong. However, I would take a smaller guy that can move over a big guy that cannot any day of the week.
