The Chicago Bears have bolstered their offensive line by signing former Los Angeles Rams center Coleman Shelton to a one-year deal.

Shelton, who entered the league as an undrafted free agent in 2018, started in all 17 games at center for the Los Angeles Rams last season. During the 2022 season, he appeared in 13 games, splitting his time between left guard, center, and right guard. In 2023, Shelton allowed 34 QB pressures, 2.0 sacks, 11 hits, and 21 hurries.

Coming to Chicago, Shelton will vie with Ryan Bates, acquired in a trade, for the starting center position. Additionally, the Bears might consider targeting a center in this year's draft class.

We spoke with Cameron DaSilva of Rams Wire to gain insight into what the Bears can anticipate from their new center and why he might be a good fit for Chicago.

What qualities define Coleman Shelton as a player?

DaSilva: Shelton is a dependable center who meshes well with quarterbacks like Matthew Stafford, excelling in setting protections and identifying blitzers. Despite not being the largest center, he displays agility and effectiveness in pass protection.

What is Shelton's primary strength?

DaSilva: His versatility stands out. Shelton is capable of playing both guard and center positions at an average starting level, offering flexibility crucial for addressing injuries, as demonstrated by the Rams in recent seasons.

In what areas does Shelton encounter challenges?

DaSilva: Shelton can struggle against larger nose tackles, occasionally getting overpowered and compromising the pocket's integrity, resulting in increased pressure on the quarterback.

What impact did Shelton make during his tenure with the Rams?

DaSilva: Shelton's versatility proved invaluable to the Rams, as he effectively filled roles at both guard and center. He represented an upgrade over Brian Allen in 2023 and managed to remain healthy throughout the entire 17-game season, a notable improvement from his 13-game appearance in 2022.

Why do you believe Shelton could thrive with the Bears?

DaSilva: Provided he receives adequate support from the guard position, Shelton should perform admirably, particularly against defenses employing smaller nose tackles. While not known for overpowering defenders, he possesses the capability to maintain a stable pocket and protect the quarterback effectively.
