The trade of Justin Fields by the Chicago Bears may have been anticipated given the availability of Caleb Williams as the potential top pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. However, what surprised many was the minimal return the Bears received in their deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

In 2021, the Bears made a significant investment to acquire Fields, trading the No. 20 overall pick, a fifth-round pick, a future first-round pick, and a future fourth-round pick to move up and select him. Fast forward three years, and with Fields' development not progressing as hoped, the Bears traded him for what seems like a modest returna 2025 sixth-round draft pick that could become a fourth-rounder if certain playing time incentives are met with the Steelers.

Reports suggest that the Bears had multiple suitors for Fields and were aiming for a mid-round pick in exchange. However, they ultimately chose to send Fields to Pittsburgh, prioritizing his development and placing him in a positive environment. Bears general manager Ryan Poles emphasized the importance of doing right by Fields, ensuring he was not kept on a team with a rookie quarterback and instead finding a situation where he could continue growing.

While the trade return may seem underwhelming, the Steelers present a promising opportunity for Fields' growth. Under the leadership of Mike Tomlin, the Steelers have a winning culture, and Russell Wilson, despite his recent struggles, offers valuable mentorship to Fields.

In terms of talent surrounding the quarterback position, the Steelers have solid pieces with potential in George Pickens, a reliable option in Pat Freiermuth at tight end, and a capable running back in Najee Harris. Additionally, their defense, anchored by T.J. Watt and Minkah Fitzpatrick, provides further support.

Although the trade value may seem low compared to recent deals involving other quarterbacks, such as Kenny Pickett and Mac Jones, the deal is done, and the Bears will now transition to a new chapter at the quarterback position while the Steelers take a low-risk chance on Fields.
