Why the Bears Signing TE Marcedes Lewis could be the Steal of Free Agency
As reported by Tom Pelissero, the Chicago Bears are signing veteran tight end Marcedes Lewis:
Lewis was drafted back in 2006, and spent the majority of his career playing for the Jaguars. After 12 seasons in Jacksonville, Lewis was released. Two months after being released, Lewis signed with the Packers, where he was a member of the team until now.
Lewis is going into his 18th season in the NFL, and is looking for a ring. He is a former Pro Bowler and Second-Team All-Pro, and the vet wants to win.
The reason why this signing could be a free agency steal, is due to Lewis' blocking skills. He is a solid catching tight end, but his blocking is what makes him stick out. As reported by Jacob Infante, Lewis "has a 75.9 PFF run-blocking grade over the last 3 years, which ranks 4th among all tight ends":
On such a young team that the Bears have, this signing is also important for wisdom. Lewis has been around since some of his teammates were little kids. He has played with some of the best in the game, and can teach these young guys.
