The Chicago Bears experienced yet another disheartening defeat on Sunday versus the Detroit Lions. Despite holding a 12-point advantage with just over four minutes remaining, the Bears left with a bitter 31-26 loss, raising numerous concerns.

In the second year of their rebuild, expectations weren't set for a championship or even playoff contention, but rather a sense of progress. Although the team's talent has improved from last season, there are growing doubts about the effectiveness of the coaching staff.

This season, the coaching team faced significant challenges. Defensive coordinator Alan Williams resigned due to a human resources issue, followed by the departure of running backs coach David Walker under similar circumstances.

Head coach Matt Eberflus emphasized the importance of maintaining standards both on and off the field, but it's evident that these standards aren't being met in either domain. The team has struggled with mental errors and penalties more this season compared to 2022. Furthermore, the behavior of the players and coaches ultimately reflects on Eberflus as the leader.

Eberflus's record as head coach, now at 6-22, marks the lowest winning percentage in Bears history. His approach seems to struggle with balancing aggression in playcalling and making effective adjustments.

Under Eberflus, even substantial leads feel precarious, exemplified by the recent collapse against the Lions and previous instances like losing a 14-point lead to Detroit last season and a 21-point advantage against the Denver Broncos in Week 4.

The team's inconsistencies are apparent, particularly in the offense. For example, after a successful touchdown drive against the Lions, offensive coordinator Luke Getsy's conservative approach led to settling for field goals, which is ineffective against high-scoring opponents like the Lions.

While the Bears traditionally do not dismiss head coaches mid-season, the mounting challenges and lack of improvement suggest that significant changes might be necessary after their Week 12 game against the Minnesota Vikings, particularly given the upcoming bye week.
