After a rough start to the 2023 season, the defense rebounded impressively, finishing with the league's best run defense and the fifth-most takeaways (28). With most of their starters returning, including All-Pro cornerback Jaylon Johnson and Pro Bowl edge rusher Montez Sweat, the Bears aim to build on their late-season success as they enter Year 3 under Matt Eberflus' scheme.
Cornerback Kyler Gordon highlighted the defense's primary objective for 2024: increasing takeaways.
«The biggest thing for me and what we all talk about is takeaways, more takeaways,» Gordon said during minicamp. «We have the goal of 20 and 20 20 interceptions and 20 fumbles. However we gotta get it, we're gonna get it. That's the standard we're holding ourselves to.»
This goal seems attainable given Chicago's performance last season, when they tied for the most interceptions in the NFL (22). However, with only six fumble recoveries, improving in that area is a clear focus.
The defense has already earned high praise from their offensive teammates. Wide receiver Keenan Allen, quarterback Caleb Williams, and guard Teven Jenkins have all referred to them as a top 5 defense in the NFL. Despite the accolades, Gordon emphasizes the importance of proving it on the field.
«I'm all about proving it,» he said. «You can say a lot of things. I definitely feel a lot from the defense in terms of chemistry, energy, and our timing. Being on the same page and a step ahead compared to last year, I foresee great things for us. I'm just excited.»
