"That's not something I'm here to do," Fields said, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "It was kind of a joke, to be honest with you."
Fields clarified that while Smith did mention his name in a team meeting, it was more of a motivational example rather than a genuine plan.
"Coach Danny was just making a point that anyone could be on special teams, no matter who you are," Fields explained to reporter Brian Batko. "He just used my name as an example. It's amusing how seriously social media takes things. It was funny to me when everyone made a big deal out of it for no reason."
Fields, who spent three scrutinized years as the Chicago Bears' starting quarterback, is looking to revive his career with the Steelers. He revealed last week that he had hoped the Bears would trade him to Pittsburgh, and praised Bears general manager Ryan Poles for sending him there in exchange for a conditional 2025 sixth-round pick in March.
Now in Pittsburgh, Fields is set to start as the No. 2 quarterback behind Russell Wilson. Nonetheless, he aims to challenge the veteran for the starting role, willing to do whatever it takesexcept returning kicks.
In related Bears news, Tarik Cohen is attempting another NFL comeback, this time with the Jets, nearly four years after his last game with Chicago. Additionally, the NFL is expected to announce the next team featured on HBO's "Hard Knocks" soon.
