10 Chicago Bears Facts You May Not Know

I love me some fun facts. For example, did you know that it is physically impossible for a pig to look up into the sky? Or that Bananas can't reproduce? So naturally, I couldn't help myself but to find you some awesome Bears facts.

1. The Chicago Bears won the first-ever NFL Playoff game in history when they beat the Portsmouth Spartans 9-0 in 1932. This game was also the first NFL game played indoors due to extreme weather conditions. It was played on an 80-yard field and was the first game to use hash marks.

2. The Bears made the NFL's first player transaction when they purchased Ed Healey from the Rock Island Independents for $100.

3. Our beloved Bears were originally called the Decatur Staleys, in you guessed it Decatur Illinois. They moved to Chicago in 1921 and became the Chicago Staleys, before finally becoming the Bears in 1922.

4. Soldier Field was designed in 1919 as a memorial to WW1 soldiers. Although it opened in 1924, the Bears did not play there until 1971. From 1922 till then they played at Wrigley after the move from Decatur.

5. The Bears have won 9 league championships. 1921, 1932, 1933, 1940, 1941, 1943, 194, and 1963. They then went on to win the 1985 super bowl and well we don't talk about 2006.

6. In a game, I would have loved to see the Bears destroy the Washington Redskins 73-0 in the 1940 NFL Championship game. The game got so out of hand that it was paused in the fourth quarter so that the referee could ask the Bears to run for the extra point instead of kicking as they were down to their last football.

7. In 1952 the Bears lost to the Dallas Texans on thanksgiving day. I suppose we got the last laugh as the Texans franchise only lasted one season. The game against the Bears ended up being their only franchise win, and the game had to be played in Akron, Ohio as the team could no longer afford to play in Dallas.

8. Out of 24,000 field goal attempts since 1994, 2600 of which have been from longer than 50 yards. Only five have been returned as a pick-six two of those five belong to Bears players. In 2005 Nathan Vasher returned a 109-yard pick-six from a Joe Nedney miss, and in 2006 Devin Hester returned a 109-yard return off Jay Healy. Not only do we have 2 out of 5 returned but in back-to-back years as well.

9. During the NFL's first six seasons the Bears had 34 shutout wins. Of course, shutouts were a lot more common in the early days of the game, but still kinda neat.

10. The Bears have been involved in 2 out of the only 2-to 0 games in NFL history. The first was a loss to Green Bay in 1932, the second a win against the Packers in 1938. The Bears make up 40% of a statistical anomaly.

There you go, 10 fun facts about the Bears.
