When Justin Fields left the game with a hand injury in the third quarter, Bagent who climbed from being an undrafted rookie from D-II Shepherd University to the Bears' second-string quarterback during training took the reins.
Though Bagent admitted the atmosphere between a preseason and a regular-season game differed, mainly due to the intensity of the defense, he maintained that to him, "football remains football." He was both "ready and eager" to lead the offense on Sunday.
"For me, playing football isn't just a sport, it's my profession," Bagent remarked. "It was exhilarating to step onto the field. The nerves are inevitable given the magnitude of the NFL stage. But the preparation was solid. I believe our coaches consistently get all the quarterbacks game-ready."
Bagent's game stats stood at 10-of-14 passes for 83 yards, including a quarterback sneak touchdown a childhood dream realized for him.
Though many commended Bagent's cool demeanor and readiness, the 23-year-old rued some decisions during the 19-13 loss.
One notable moment was two minutes before the game ended. As the Bears advanced into the Vikings' side, Bagent spotted receiver DJ Moore but misjudged the pass, leading to an interception.
Despite the game's result, Bagent exited Soldier Field with immense gratitude for the life he's been given.
"The journey I've had is not common," Bagent reflected. "Both in wins and losses, I remain thankful for my family and the relationships that brought me to this point."
Coach Matt Eberflus expressed his belief in Bagent's potential on the main stage, highlighting his impressive demeanor.
"He's consistently poised," Eberflus noted. "His game management was spot-on. Everything ran smoothly under his command."
Many of Bagent's colleagues shared Eberflus' positive sentiments. They highlighted his poise, readiness, and self-belief.
DJ Moore commented, "He proved he's got the skill. His performance was commendable."
Cornerback Jaylon Johnson added, "He's always displayed confidence. He's a skilled player who takes charge. I wasn't surprised at all by his performance."
Eberflus later informed that Fields' X-rays were clear. But with Fields' return still uncertain, the team expressed their trust in Bagent's capabilities.
Cole Kmet, the team's tight end, said, "His self-belief is evident. From our training days together, it's clear he trusts himself. If he leads for a while, we'll support him fully."
