Rumors of trade interest in both Young and Sweat have been circulating in the lead-up to the October 31 deadline. According to Josina Anderson of CBS Sports, "several identifiable teams" have expressed interest in trading for one of these pass rushers and signing them to long-term extensions.
NFL insider Jordan Schultz now offers some clarity on the potential cost for acquiring Young or Sweat.
"From everything I've been told, it's probably going to take about a second or third-round pick to acquire one of them," Schultz stated in a video for Bleacher Report on October 26. "But I do think, at the right price, yes, the Commanders would consider moving one of those talented young pass rushers. That's my understanding."
The Bears possess an extra second-round pick in 2025, acquired from the Carolina Panthers in the trade involving the top pick of the 2023 NFL Draft. This additional draft asset could be a valuable trade chip if the Bears decide to make a significant move.
While the Bears' stance as buyers or sellers at the trade deadline remains uncertain given their 2-5 record in the midst of a rebuild, Young and Sweat hold appeal as long-term building blocks. The Bears are unlikely to part with their 2024 first-round picks, which currently project as the No. 1 (Carolina) and No. 3 (Chicago) overall selections. However, they can leverage their additional second-rounder for a potential trade without compromising their draft capital.
Moreover, the Bears have substantial cap space, estimated at around $110 million, for the 2024 offseason, allowing them to sign one of the Commanders' pass rushers to a lucrative contract extension.
The Bears' pass rush has been a significant weakness in the 2023 season, ranking among the NFL's lowest in sacks. Acquiring a high-caliber talent like Young or Sweat could provide a foundation for long-term defensive improvement.
