Every time Chicago Bears' quarterback Justin Fields hits the training ground, his dedication to refining his skills from the 2022 season is palpable. There's an ambition that pulses through him, one that is set on achieving unparalleled greatness in the NFL. Already, Fields has carved out a name for himself as a formidable rushing threat, even surpassing records previously held by the legendary Michael Vick. However, he's not resting on those laurels.

Vick, despite his dynamic rushing ability, is often left out of discussions about the NFL's greatest quarterbacks due to his relative underdevelopment as a passer. Fields is determined to avoid that fate, which is why he has invested heavily in honing his footwork and deep-diving into game tapes. Nicholas Moreano of CHGO, after observing Fields' spring practices, attests to the significant progress he's making.
During a recent conversation with Bill Zimmerman on the Bears Banter podcast, Moreano narrated a fascinating account of Fields' evolving prowess as a passer.
It's been noted that Fields has historically been reluctant to take risks with tight window throws, especially across the middle. His ability to swiftly progress through his options was also called into question as he would often delay, granting the defense ample time to apply pressure. However, Moreano's observations reflect notable advancements in these areas. He recounts how Fields seamlessly made the decision to pass to Cole Kmet, expertly accounting for the imposing 6'5 height of Tremaine Edmunds. That's a level of skill that separates the best from the rest.
Impressive as this may sound, Fields' true test lies in replicating these performances under the heightened intensity of live games, where defenses are actively strategizing to shut him down. He did give glimpses of this ability last season, with some of his best throws being the result of quick pocket progressions. There's no question about his potential, it's about harnessing it with consistent results, which is the toughest part. With a more fortified supporting cast this season, expectations are high. If the Bears get the Justin Fields that's been on display in practice, it's going to be a good year indeed.
