If the Chicago Bears have reservations about having P.J. Walker as the backup for star quarterback Justin Fields, Colin Cowherd offers a daring idea.

On August 23, during The Herd's broadcast on Fox Sports Radio, Cowherd spent significant airtime discussing the surprising situation in San Francisco. Trey Lance, who was the third pick in the 2023 draft, has been demoted to the third quarterback position, lagging behind starting quarterback Brock Purdy and the seasoned Sam Darnold.

Responding to reports from NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero that the Niners are mulling over their options for their former top pick, Cowherd threw the Bears' name into the hat as potential suitors.

"Look at Chicago," Cowherd mused. "Who's covering Justin Fields? Trey Lance could definitely run Justin Fields' style of offense. Your backup should mirror your starter's skills. I believe Justin's the future, but Trey could offer a similar style on the move. For me, if I'm Chicago, I'd consider parting with a fifth or sixth draft pick for him. Invite him to camp, see what he's got."

Ryan Poles, the Bears' GM, has so far shown a cautious approach during his tenure. But would he be tempted if Lance was on the table for just a sixth-round pick?

While Lance hasn't quite justified his third overall pick status during his first two NFL seasons, there's no denying his raw talent. The promising arm strength that caught San Francisco's attention and his mobility in the pocket might just tempt the Bears' offensive coordinator, Luke Getsy. Especially if the price is a mere sixth-rounder.

However, Chicago would need to factor in the financial implications of Lance's contract, with a potential $5.31 million to cover in 2024.

With Fields due for a potential extension and other team needs on the horizon, taking on Lance might be too steep a gamble.

Yet, if the Bears don't venture on Lance, Tyson Bagent's rapid rise could be their answer. The undrafted rookie's stellar preseason performance, particularly against Indianapolis, has showcased skills that belie his Division II pedigree.

While Chicago remains tight-lipped about Bagent potentially overtaking Walker for the backup QB role, a continued strong preseason showing from Bagent might force their hand.

For now, it's a waiting game. But as the preseason ends, Chicago will have crucial decisions to make regarding their quarterback roster.
