In a surprising turn of events, the San Francisco 49ers have parted ways with their former No. 3 overall pick from the 2021 NFL Draft, Trey Lance. ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that the 49ers sent Lance to the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for a fourth-round draft selection.
Lance's position with the 49ers seemed uncertain after San Francisco declared Sam Darnold as the backup to starting quarterback Brock Purdy. Now, the former North Dakota State standout will look to rejuvenate his career with another NFC powerhouse.
While the Cowboys firmly have Dak Prescott as their lead signal-caller, followed by Cooper Rush, the addition of Lance might challenge the spot held by third-string QB Will Grier.
It's worth noting that the 49ers made a significant investment to secure Lance's services just two years ago. They traded four draft selections, including three first-rounders, to the Miami Dolphins to ascend to the No. 3 spot and select Lance, who was picked after Zach Wilson joined the New York Jets.
Lance began the 2022 season as the starting quarterback for the 49ers. However, a devastating ankle injury in a Week 2 match against the Seattle Seahawks prematurely ended his season. The reins were then handed back to backup Jimmy Garoppolo, who later also sustained a season-ending injury. It was then up to Brock Purdy, the third-string quarterback, to guide the team. Purdy's impressive performance not only secured him the starting spot but also signaled the end of Lance's tenure with the 49ers, a franchise that once saw him as their future cornerstone.
