Ramsey, a three-time All-Pro and six-time Pro Bowler, joins former All-Pro cornerback Xavien Howard in Miami, making their secondary one of the most formidable in the league. The Dolphins have made aggressive moves in the past year, also trading for All-Pro wide receiver Tyreek Hill and Pro Bowl linebacker Bradley Chubb.
The Rams acquired Ramsey in a blockbuster trade in 2019, sending multiple first-round draft picks to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Ramsey signed a record-breaking contract extension with Los Angeles less than a year later, becoming the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history at the time.
Ramsey has three years remaining on his contract, although there is no guaranteed money left on the final two seasons. The Rams will take on $19.6 million of dead money on their 2023 salary cap with $5.6 million in cap savings by trading Ramsey before June 1.
Ramsey had a strong season last year, ranking third among cornerbacks in the league, according to Pro Football Focus. He recorded four interceptions, 18 passes defended, 12 pass breakups, three forced fumbles, and two sacks. In seven seasons, Ramsey has 19 interceptions, seven forced fumbles, and two sacks, earning first-team All-Pro honors in 2017, 2020, and 2021.
The Dolphins needed to address their cornerback situation after informing Byron Jones he would be released. They made multiple salary cap-clearing moves in the past week, restructuring contracts for Hill, Chubb, and Terron Armstead. With the addition of Ramsey, the Dolphins are poised to make a strong push for the playoffs next season.
