ESPN's Pete Thamel has revealed that Boston College is nearing a deal with Bill O'Brien to appoint him as the university's next head coach. O'Brien recently departed from the New England Patriots to assume the role of offensive coordinator for the Ohio State Buckeyes.
At 54 years old, O'Brien boasts prior experience as the head coach of the Penn State Nittany Lions (2012 to 2013) and the NFL's Houston Texans (2014 to 2020). During his tenure with the Texans, O'Brien achieved a 52-48-0 record and guided the team to four postseason appearances, albeit with limited success in the playoffs.
The vacancy at Boston College arose unexpectedly following Jeff Hafley's departure to join the Green Bay Packers as their defensive coordinator. This move occurred after Packers head coach Matt LaFleur opted to part ways with Joe Barry and recruit Hafley for the position.
