Taking to Instagram, veteran defensive end Romeo Okwara announced his retirement from football after eight seasons in the NFL, six of which were spent with the Detroit Lions. Okwara explained in his post that the decision came after a period of introspection and meditation.
Okwara had been a pivotal part of the Lions' roster since 2018, establishing himself as a prominent pass-rusher following stints with the New York Giants. His leadership played a significant role in the Lions' transformation into playoff contenders after enduring a challenging five-year rebuilding phase in Detroit.
Originally entering the league as an undrafted free agent in 2016 with the Giants, Okwara's journey led him to Detroit ahead of the 2018 season.
During his time with the Lions, Okwara showcased his prowess on the field, recording 7.5 sacks, one pass breakup, and a forced fumble in 15 games. Despite a quieter following season with just 1.5 sacks, Okwara bounced back to his stellar form, achieving a career-high of 10 sacks during the 2020 campaign.
