Former Jacksonville Jaguars Employee Accused of Embezzling Over $22 Million in Elaborate Scheme

Amit Patel, a former Jaguars staff member who served the organization from 2018 to 2023, is facing a barrage of allegations, claiming that he pilfered more than $22 million from the franchise during the period from 2019 to 2023. This purported theft involved the exploitation of the team's virtual credit card program.

According to reports, Patel utilized the misappropriated funds to acquire two vehicles, a condominium, a high-end designer watch valued at over $95,000, and even chartered personal jets. Furthermore, he is alleged to have used the ill-gotten money to invest in cryptocurrency and place bets on online gambling platforms. Patel's name has emerged in court documents.

While the federal filing did not explicitly name the Jacksonville Jaguars, referring to the organization as "Business A," the team has since acknowledged that it fell victim to Patel's alleged criminal activities.

In an official statement, the team stated, "We can confirm that in February 2023, the team terminated the employment of the individual named in the filing. Over the past several months, we have cooperated fully with the FBI and the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Florida during their investigation and thank them for their efforts in this case. As was made clear in the charges, this individual was a former manager of financial planning and analysis who took advantage of his trusted position to covertly and intentionally commit significant fraudulent financial activity at the team's expense for personal benefit. This individual had no access to confidential football strategy, personnel, or other football information. The team engaged experienced law and accounting firms to conduct a comprehensive independent review, which concluded that no other team employees were involved in or aware of his criminal activity."

Patel now faces charges of wire fraud and illegal monetary transactions and is accused of embezzling at least $22,221,454.40 from the Jaguars.

These allegations add to a recent string of issues plaguing the franchise in the past 48 hours. Notably, Jaguars' star wide receiver Christian Kirk sustained a groin injury during a game against the Bengals, leading to core muscle surgery and an expected 6-8 week recovery period. Additionally, quarterback Trevor Lawrence suffered a right high ankle sprain in the same game, although it was determined not to be a major injury.
