McMichael, who has been battling ALS since 2021, was initially hospitalized due to suspected pneumonia. However, his family later clarified that it was a urinary tract infection. He was promptly placed on three antibiotics and admitted to intensive care.
"The family appreciates continued prayers for Steve's speedy recovery," they stated. McMichael's last hospitalization was in August, where he spent nearly a week fighting sepsis and pneumonia. Communicating through a specialized device that tracks eye movements, McMichael has expressed the profound significance of being inducted into the Hall of Fame.
Having played 15 seasons in the NFL, predominantly with the Bears, McMichael earned four All-Pro selections and two Pro Bowl appearances, amassing 847 tackles and 95 sacks.
Now aged 66, McMichael was recently announced as one of the seven members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2024. His induction ceremony in Canton is scheduled for Saturday, August 3, as part of the Hall of Fame weekend. There's hope that his health will permit him to attend and possibly deliver a speech.
The NFL has pledged to cover all medical expenses necessary to facilitate McMichael's attendance at the ceremony.
