BREAKING: Renowned NFL Defensive Coordinator Sadly Dies
Former New Orleans Saints defensive mastermind, Steve Sidwell, responsible for leading some of the franchise's most formidable defenses, has sadly passed away at the age of 78.
Saints Owner Gayle Benson shared her sentiments, «Steve Sidwell's nine-year tenure with the Saints was marked by remarkable defensive strategies and the nurturing of some of the most legendary defensive talents in our history.» She added, «Tom, my late husband and the team's owner during Steve's era, held him in high regard both as a coaching gem and a cherished individual. Steve wasn't just an exceptional coach but also a devoted family man. Our hearts go out to his wife Kathleen, sons Brad and Scott, and the entire Sidwell family during this sorrowful time."
Sidwell first joined the Saints in 1986 as the defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach, holding the position till 1994. Under his guidance, the team achieved league-leading positions in points defense and excelled in both passing and rushing defense. Furthermore, he played a pivotal role in shaping the 'Dome Patrol', a stellar linebacker unit including Hall of Famers Rickey Jackson and Sam Mills, along with Pat Swilling and Vaughan Johnson. These four, together with Sidwell, have been honored in the Saints Hall of Fame.
Sidwell's remarkable coaching journey also saw him as the defensive coordinator for the Houston Oilers, Patriots, and Seattle Seahawks post his stint with the Saints.
Before his illustrious NFL coaching career spanning 21 years, Sidwell, an alumni linebacker from the University of Colorado, coached college football for 16 years, initiating his journey at his alma mater from 1966-73.
