Russell Wilson's first touchdown drive against the Dolphins showcased a familiar sight.

Although it was eventually overshadowed by Miami's scoring frenzy, this drive offered insights into the evolving synergy between the seasoned quarterback and coach Sean Payton.

During Denver's second possession, Wilson smoothly completed four out of five throws, amassing 49 yards. Quick passes to Jerry Jeudy, Courtland Sutton, Javonte Williams, and another to Sutton set the rhythm. The only hiccup was a tight-window miss to Chris Manhertz in the end zone.

However, facing a third-and-6 on the Dolphins' 12-yard line, Wilson had to innovate. With pressure from Jaelen Phillips and Bradley Chubb, he maneuvered out of the pocket to his right, buying time. Spotting Sutton, he executed a touchdown pass.

This ability to think on his feet isn't new for Wilson. It mirrors two of his touchdowns against Las Vegas in Week 1, where he exited the pocket rightwards, allowing receivers to improvise and score.

Praising his team, Wilson said, «The offensive line is battling hard, providing me ample time. Our receivers, backs, and tight ends are exploding into their roles, always ready to make plays."

Wilson's unique ability to both play within the system and improvise is a testament to the potential of his collaboration with Payton. Ideally, Wilson plays on cue, using his flair for spontaneity as an ace in the hole, especially in the constricted space of the red zone.

However, no quarterback is flawless. Wilson had a misstep against Washington, opting for a solo play instead of a set play-action, resulting in a sack. Despite this, Payton remains confident in Wilson's overall performance this season.

"He's nimble, makes sound choices, and his deep-ball throws have been particularly impressive," remarked Payton.

As per the NFL's Next Gen Stats, Wilson's velocity stood at 14.15 mph during his pass to Sutton against Miami, surpassing his on-the-run touchdowns from last year.

Yet, the Broncos need to capitalize more on their red zone visits. They've converted only five touchdowns from 11 opportunities. Against Miami, Sutton missed a potential touchdown, and in other games, Wilson experienced a few misfires.

These seemingly minor hiccups can be the determining factor in many NFL games.
