Cairo Santos has discreetly stabilized the Bears' kicking situation.
After the Robbie Gould era, the Chicago Bears struggled to find a reliable kicker, making it tough to witness Gould's success with the San Francisco 49ers and Cody Parkey's infamous double doink.
The revolving door of kickers, including Connor Barth, Mike Nugent, Eddy Pineiro, and Parkey, highlighted the premature nature of Gould's release by former GM Ryan Pace.
Cairo Santos, also part of this list, joined the Bears midseason in November 2017 and returned in 2020. In his second stint, Santos provided stability to a team in desperate need. Despite early struggles in 2022, Santos worked through his issues, thanks to GM Ryan Poles and head coach Matt Eberflus.
Santos has been perfect this season, making all 11 field goals and missing just one of 15 extra-point attempts. His consistency since rejoining the Bears in 2020 is remarkable, with a 91.7% success rate on field goals (88-of-96) and 92.9% on extra points (105-of-113).
Santos' quiet but consistent success has, in a way, eased the pain of Gould's puzzling departure. With Santos becoming an unrestricted free agent after the 2023 season, the Bears should prioritize re-signing him in the offseason if he maintains his impressive performance.
