With Fields sidelined due to a dislocated right thumb, undrafted rookie Tyson Bagent stepped in as the starting quarterback and delivered an impressive performance. Bagent completed 21 of 29 passes for 162 yards and a touchdown in the win.
Bagent had previously praised Fields for his assistance in preparing for the Raiders game during the week, and Fields continued to provide support during the actual game by taking on the role of an assistant coach.
"Justin was awesome. He was awesome," remarked quarterbacks coach Andrew Janocko on Thursday. "If you watch the TV broadcast, you can see those two on the bench, and they didn't miss a beat. Justin would come up to me and say, 'Hey, take a look at this,' or go up to [offensive coordinator Luke Getsy] and say, 'Hey, we've got this.' He played an integral part in that win."
While the Bears maintain that Fields is "on track" in his recovery, he is considered "doubtful" to play in the upcoming game against the Los Angeles Chargers on "Sunday Night Football." With Fields still sidelined, Bagent will make his second career start in Los Angeles.
Fields is putting in extensive effort with the Bears' training staff to facilitate his return for the Week 9 matchup against the New Orleans Saints. While his primary focus remains on his rehabilitation, Fields has been instrumental during practice sessions as the team prepares to face the Chargers.
Janocko spoke highly of Fields, emphasizing his dedication and support for the team. "He is so much fun to be around," Janocko noted. "Everything he does is working towards getting back on the field. It hurts him not to be out there, but he's gone above and beyond in his supportive role, helping this team secure victories. He genuinely cares about Tyson and the other players who are on the field in his absence. He approaches each day with a team-first mentality, whether it's related to his own recovery or assisting his teammates in their preparation. During practice, he's actively engaged, holding the practice script, and offering guidance to his fellow players. His awareness is exceptional, and he contributes to the team even when he's not on the field."
Bagent, recognizing Fields as a leader by example, has consistently valued the support and guidance Fields provides. He understands the invaluable resource Fields represents and intends to continue seeking his advice while guiding the team.
"He told me anything I need, don't hesitate to ask him," Bagent shared. "And I haven't hesitated. I believe that's going to benefit the team greatly."
