Butkus passed away suddenly on October 5, 2023, hours before the Bears took on the Commanders in the week 5 edition of Thursday Night Football. He was 80 years old.
Butkus played linebacker for the Bears for his entire career, which was from 1965 to 1973.
He finished his career as a 2-time Defensive Player of the Year, 8-time All-Pro, an 8-time Pro Bowler, and listed at number 2 on the 100 Greatest Bears of All Time List.
Butkus was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Hame in 1979, and also had his number retired by the Bears in 1994.
Now, we will be seeing his number again, but this time on a patch and on every single Bears players jersey.
The Bears will start wearing his number patch on Sunday.
