Head coach Matt Eberflus attempted to shield veteran offensive lineman Cody Whitehair from an apparent benching during the Bears' 19-13 loss to the Minnesota Vikings last Sunday.

Whitehair had started at center in the game but struggled with several errant snaps throughout the first three quarters. After three consecutive poor snaps to backup quarterback Tyson Bagent in the third quarter, the Bears decided to replace Whitehair with Lucas Patrick.

Eberflus explained that the decision was made because Patrick has more experience at center, with Whitehair having played 3,927 snaps at center compared to Patrick's 1,258. Whitehair, who left the Bears' locker room before it opened to the media on Sunday, addressed his snapping issues during a Wednesday press conference at Halas Hall.

He acknowledged the need to keep practicing and working on improving his snapping. When asked if it was a mental issue at this point, Whitehair did not make excuses and expressed his commitment to working on the problem.

During Wednesday's practice, Patrick, Doug Kramer, and Dan Feeney were the only linemen seen practicing snapping. Given that right guard Nate Davis is sidelined with an ankle sprain, it would make sense for Whitehair and Teven Jenkins to serve as the guards with Patrick at center.

This season has been challenging for everyone at Halas Hall, with the Bears holding a 1-5 record, and Whitehair's snapping issues are just one of the many challenges the team has faced. Whitehair emphasized his dedication to his work and expressed his determination to analyze his performance and find ways to improve.

Regarding the plan for Sunday's game against the Raiders, that decision rests with Eberflus, offensive coordinator Luke Getsy, and offensive line coach Chris Morgan. Whitehair emphasized his team-first mentality and willingness to play either guard or center as needed.

Ultimately, Whitehair is focused on contributing to the team's success and addressing the issues that have arisen during what has been a turbulent season for the Chicago Bears.
