The Chicago Bears made an important move in Thursday night's NFL draft by picking offensive tackle Darnell Wright from the University of Tennessee. Wright played a key role in the Volunteers' recent success, and the Bears hope he can do the same for them.

In a press conference following his selection, Wright spoke highly of his new team:

"That's what I'm here for is for anything he [quarterback Justin Fields] needs. That's my job to keep him clean. Amazing quarterback and the things he does, we're going to have a great team.»

Wright's confidence and versatility could be his biggest assets.

"I'm big and I'm strong," he said. «But I don't think people will realize once they really get to see some more of me, they'll see how athletic I am and that I can play both sides as needed. My athleticism will speak for itself.»

Micah Parsons, the All-Pro Dallas Cowboys linebacker, also praised the Bears' selection of Wright.

"Great pick. Chicago was on a mission. You did exactly what you had to do," Parsons said on Bleacher Report's live reaction to the draft. "You want a guy like this. Justin Fields isn't just a passer, he's a runner too. And Chicago likes to run the ball. I'm not mad at this pick. He's a great run blocker. He's a great pass-blocker."

The Bears' offensive line was a key focus in the draft, and for good reason. They were the NFL's most prolific rushing offense last season, running for over 3,000 yards as a team. The addition of Wright will provide the team with a solid right tackle option, allowing them to shift their focus to other areas of need.

Although the Bears had an opportunity to select Georgia defensive tackle Jalen Carter with the ninth overall pick, they opted to sell the pick to the Philadelphia Eagles for a one-spot slide and a 2024 fourth-round selection. Even then, at No. 10 overall, the Bears had a few options at left tackle between Peter Skoronski and Broderick Jones.

However, Bears general manager Ryan Poles chose to reinforce his confidence in 2022 starting left tackle Braxton Jones and cashed in on plug-and-play right tackle in Wright, who becomes the first offensive lineman the Bears have drafted in the first round since 2013 when they selected eventual two-time All-Pro Kyle Long.

With Wright on board, the Bears are hopeful they can build on their recent success and compete for a playoff spot in the upcoming season.
