Despite the Chicago Bears' 4-8 record, there appears to be a growing sense of confidence within the organization regarding head coach Matt Eberflus' job security.
According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, many individuals within the Bears organization believe that the team has shown improvement throughout the current season and has continued to play with determination under Eberflus' leadership.
As the regular season's final five games approach, Eberflus's coaching position remains under scrutiny. The Athletic's Dianna Russini recently reported that the current coaching staff is expected to remain in place until the end of the regular season, but a comprehensive evaluation of all aspects is ongoing.
The Bears are on the verge of recording their third consecutive season with a sub-.500 record, with just one more loss needed to solidify this disappointing outcome. It is worth noting that the team has already surpassed its win total from Eberflus' first year when they finished with a 3-14 record.
Fowler also highlighted the improved performance of quarterback Justin Fields since his return from a thumb injury, which reflects positively on Eberflus. Fields, now in his third year, has achieved career-high completion percentages, passing for 1,587 yards, 12 touchdowns, and six interceptions. Notably, Fields currently boasts the highest touchdown rate (5.4 percent) and the lowest interception rate (2.7 percent) of his career.
The Bears have demonstrated signs of resurgence by winning two of their last three games after a challenging 2-7 start to the season. Their lone loss during this period was a close contest against the Detroit Lions, in which Chicago held a 12-point lead late in the fourth quarter.
Looking ahead, the Bears' remaining schedule includes matchups against the Lions, Cleveland Browns, Arizona Cardinals, Atlanta Falcons, and Green Bay Packers. With at least two, possibly three, winnable games in this lineup, it wouldn't be surprising if the Bears decide to give Eberflus another year if they reach six or seven wins. This decision may hinge on the team's continued determination and performance in the upcoming games as they strive to return to playoff contention.
