Trailing 20-17 with just over a minute left on the clock, Mahomes connected on a deep pass to tight end Travis Kelce. Kelce, navigating through a trio of defenders, executed a lateral pass to wide receiver Kadarius Toney, who sprinted 24 yards for what seemed like a game-winning touchdown. However, a penalty flag had been thrown.
Toney was flagged for being marginally offsides just before the snap, resulting in a heart-wrenching turn of events. The Chiefs' subsequent drive yielded no results, ending with a turnover on downs as the game's final seconds ticked away.
Mahomes, overcome with frustration, vehemently slammed his helmet and had to be restrained by teammates as he vented his frustrations at the officials.
In a candid moment, Mahomes, while embracing Bills quarterback Josh Allen, exclaimed, "The most outrageous call I've ever witnessed. Offensive offsides in such a crucial moment, it's absolutely dreadful."
Subsequently, the quarterback issued an apology for his actions and emphasized his disapproval of his uncharacteristic behavior. "I mean, I care deeply about this game and my teammates," Mahomes shared with Carrington Harrison of 610 Sports in Kansas City. "I always want to give my all to win. But, clearly, I can't behave that way, not towards officials or anyone else in life. . . . My biggest regret is how I treated Josh [Allen] after the game because he had no part in it. I was still angry and emotional, but that's not acceptable, especially as a role model for kids watching the game."
Nevertheless, the controversy surrounding whether such a minor penalty should have been called at such a pivotal moment has dominated league discussions.
Chicago Bears wide receiver DJ Moore weighed in on the contentious call during an appearance on sports radio 670 The Score on Monday.
Moore commented, "Toney needed to communicate with the referee. He was slightly offsides, but if the ref had just signaled for him to step back a few inches, it would have been fine. In my opinion, they probably shouldn't have allowed the play to continue for that long."
Moore stressed the importance of the receiver checking with the official to ensure he is not offsides before the play unfolds.
"You look to the sideline, you point to the ref, if he signals 'you're good,' then you proceed. If he instructs you to move back, you comply. But I'm not sure what transpired on that play," he explained.
