Before anyone leaps to conclusions, let's add some context. Corey Wootton, a former Bear himself, was on Sports Talk Chicago recently, sharing his insights about Johnson. He expressed that, from what he had observed, Johnson exhibited many of the traits reminiscent of Henry - robust, hard to tackle, and surprisingly swift.
Can we label Johnson as the new Henry? Certainly not. Henry towers over most, standing three inches taller and carrying 20 more pounds. Few, if any, NFL running backs can match his unique blend of size, strength, and speed. However, Johnson does bring his own brand of power to the field, with a well-developed build and a similar resilience against initial tackles.
Think of him more like an upgraded David Montgomery.Montgomery, the former Bears' running back, was renowned for his resilience against tackles. Johnson, being taller and quicker, provides a more dynamic option. He enhances the squad with his receiving skills, his prowess as a pass protector, and his strong special teams contribution. If Johnson morphs into an even better version of Montgomery, it's a massive win for the Bears. While everyone would appreciate Johnson becoming the next Derrick Henry, such expectations are not reasonable.
One thing is evident, though. The Bears are packing quite a punch at the running back position. Having Johnson as your third option going into training camp is indeed a luxury. With seasoned pros like Khalil Herbert and D'Onta Foreman, and if Luke Getsy can skillfully harness their individual talents, the Bears' ground game could be an even more formidable force this season. Add to that an improved aerial offense, and we might be in for a rollicking season from the Bears' offense.
