Former NFL Stars Suspect Collusion Among Owners Against Lamar Jackson

After the Baltimore Ravens designated the non-exclusive franchise tag on quarterback Lamar Jackson, a number of teams, including the Falcons, Panthers, Raiders, Commanders, and Dolphins, announced that they would not pursue the former MVP QB. This prompted a group of former NFL stars to take to social media and suggest that something fishy was going on behind the scenes.

Robert Griffin III, JJ Watt, and David Mulugheta alluded to collusion among NFL owners to keep Jackson off the market. Griffin pointed out that Jackson is a unanimous MVP who has led the NFL in passing touchdowns, is 26 years old, and has a 45-16 record as a starter, yet QB-needy teams are not showing interest in him. Watt wondered why teams would publicly rule out a prime MVP quarterback.

The Ravens used the non-exclusive franchise tag just before the deadline, allowing other teams to negotiate with Jackson. However, it seems that he may not get the long-term deal he wants from the Ravens or anyone else. Jackson is seeking a deal similar to the fully guaranteed contract that Deshaun Watson received from the Browns after being traded by the Houston Texans.

If Jackson signs an offer sheet with another team, the Ravens have the right to match the offer or take two first-round picks as compensation. The non-exclusive tag will pay Jackson $32 million this season.

In the words of Griffin, "Don't smell right to me."
